Aside

I have to clear out our yard so the Kells 28 must go. 12 hp yanmar diesel, wheel steering, roller furling, great for single handing, projects have been started but the boat is sailable now. Image

The giva away price is $ 2400.

I am looking forward to being back in the water on Ariadne, even with my broken neck healing …..

Sailing Ariadne on a brisk day in Casco Bay

Sailing outside Cliff island on a small craft advisory day.

Ariadne, Morgan M34 centerboard

Our first summer season sailing Ariadne was like a wonderful dream for us. Sailing with our Chebeague Island friends and living onboard as much as possible gave us an appetite for life on a boat.

New seats ordered

I ordered new seats for the boat. they are not the original but I want this to be a more utilitarian boat. No fold down seats for me, I want more room onboard for carrying stuff to the island.

Damaged fiberglass repaired

The damaged areas are looking much better.  I have not done this myself.  As a result the work is progressing much more quickly.

Repairing the damaged areas

A tree fell on the boat during the ice storm of 2009 and caused substantial damage to the boat.  I’m not sure what the correct name is for the area that is damaged but I think it is the coaming?

I will be grinding and applying fiberglass and painting the area.

A new boat project

I was looking for a new trailer for another boat that I am working on.  That is how these things seem to start for me. One thing leads to another and another. The new/used trailer had a damaged boat on it and naturally I bought the whole package.

The boat had been hit by a tree in the december 2008 ice storm and had no attention since by the looks. the interior was frozen and full of leaves, ice and snow.

I took her home and shoehorned her into the garage and fired up the wood stove to thaw things out.

There was a lot of thawing and dripping, about 15 gallons of dripping, then I started to asses the damage and condition of the boat. I am still deciding on the fate of the boat. I could scrap the boat and keep the motor and trailer and still have gotten a smoking deal but salvaging the boat would be a bonus.

Upon exploration it became obvious that the plywood backing used for the cushions and seats were completely rotted.

At this point I realize that it will not be cost effective to put the boat back to original condition and instead I need to determine whether it is worthwhile to strip the boat down, make necessary repairs and use it as a utility boat up in Casco Bay. No carpet and fancy cushions but good quick cheap transportation.

The carpet was all completely soaked and the glue was no longer holding it to the boat.  It needed to be removed.

The expanding foam that was injected under the plywood floor is also saturated with water. This is a hugh pain in the neck because it is very difficult to dry this out.

Here is the before and after….

Thinking about the work that needs to be done on C126

My Pearson commander sits on the hard for the winter at the Chebeague Island Boat yard and I can’t help but think of the repairs that it needs.

The boat yard

There is a large hole in the forward edge of the keel that has opened up from and ineffective repair from a previous owner.

keel damage

The rudder shaft bushings and shoe are shot.

Rudder Post cracking

There are cracks in the cockpit around the rudder post that have allowed water to migrate into the cockpit floor.

On the mooring

I will need to work on it in the Spring when the weather warms up but at least I can plan my attack now.

I want to go sailing

I want to go sailing some place warm.
